Heston at Heathrow

Fat Duck devotees might be interested to know that celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal is planning a new venture - at Heathrow airport. Sam Hetti (18 Nov’13)

The venue will be the new £2.5 billion Terminal 2 (The Queen’s Building) which opens in June 2014 and will include a bar and a deli. The fare will be toned down; fish and chips, pizza and burgers but with a Blumenthal twist as featured in his TV show In Search of Perfection.

He follows the lead of Gordon Ramsay who landed his Plane Food outlet in Heathrow's Terminal Five. The new restaurant plans to despatch "multi-sensory" dining to customers within 11 minutes of orders being placed, as befits Heathrow’s business .

"This is an incredible project,” said Blumenthal. “There are so many different elements to consider when people are travelling. We want to deliver a broad spectrum of easy-to-enjoy, familiar dishes, from fish and chips to pizza. When we made the  In Search of Perfection series we spent hours researching the temperature of a pizza oven or the crunch of batter; it’s this inspiration that is behind the menu at Heathrow – with some truly British eccentricity thrown in for good measure."

“Our brand new, £2.5bn terminal will not only showcase the best of the UK’s art and engineering talent, but also one of its greatest culinary minds. This new restaurant will certainly introduce a unique and original dimension to the airport eating experience at Heathrow’ said Muriel Zingraff-Shariff, Heathrow’s retail director.

Fast food chain Leon and retailer John Lewis are also set to join Terminal 2 eager to capitalise on its expected 20 million annual passenger traffic .

Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong - Review

It’s all about height in Hong Kong. And the three-tier ‘Mandarin high tea’ looming in front of us is no exception. It eclipses the two-tier ‘Classic’ tea sitting on adjoining tables. Laden with finger sandwiches, pastries, scones, the highlight is the must-spread, legendary Mandarin rose-petal jam. Sat Bal (28 Nov '13)

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Autumn Regatta dinner

Upon arrival in Hong Kong we were invited to dinner by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC). And not just any dinner. No, this was an exclusive pre-event dinner at the venerable Club, steeped in a 160-year nautical pedigree. The dinner marked the launch of RHKYC’s Autumn Regatta over the weekend of September 8 & 9 and was celebrated in style. Sat Bal (Sep ’13)

As dining backdrops go Victoria Harbour is close to a perfect setting as it twinkles away in the background. The foreground is equally perfect as Laurent Perrier twinkles on the dinner tables reminding us of the champagne brand’s supporting status tonight. Behind the event are our hosts Canaletto, a London-based luxury residence developer (‘Official Luxury Property Development Partner’) and SHK Private (‘Official Private Wealth Management Partner’).

Partners: Okay, we didn’t sponsor the event but the other two did!

The vintage Autumn Regatta also attracted sponsor sparkle from McLaren (‘Official Luxury Automobile’) whose new MP4-12C model was exhibited on arrival at the Club and up for test drive during the event. Small Luxury Hotels of the World also joined theevent partnership fray

Juliana Fong (SHK’s VP Marketing & Client Relationship) headed our table and the flow of her welcome speech soon gave way to the flow of more champagne - and what tasted like the most succulent lamb shank this side of Asia Pacific.

SHK kept busy, also hosting a cocktail party a few days later prior to the ‘Official Prize Presentation’ celebrations. Juliana Fong led the grand prize-giving ceremony which marked the end of the Regatta and the party atmosphere belied the obstructive ‘boat protests’ that had taken place. With the RHKYC Pipe Band bringing Scottish cheer and plenty of sponsored refreshment the winners were applauded with gusto.

The Autumn Regatta is the perfect start to the new sailing season and this year is sure to be as exciting as all in the past,” said Russ Parker, RHKYC Rear Commodore (Sailing). “The schedule of social events is also a welcome addition to this historic event, which will set the scene for an exciting year of sailing in Hong Kong!”
