Day Two headliners of MTV Presents: Ocean City Sounds have now been announced. Take a bow, Pete Tong and the Heritage Orchestra…

The Heritage Orchestra will be conducted by Jules Buckley to present a two-hour set that will see their ‘Ibiza Classics’ show entertain both dance and classics fans. The successful blend has sold out venues across the UK including the O2 Arena in London.

Day Two of MTV Presents takes place on Friday 27 July and is the only South West performance of the year.

Pete Tong is well known to the MTV audience, a veteran BBC Radio 1 DJ for over 25 years and leading ambassador for electronic music. He started working with the 65-piece Heritage Orchestra and conductor Jules Buckley in 2015. They’ve since released two albums – ‘Classic House’ and ‘Ibiza Classics’ and taken the show on a global road.

Fans can look forward to the 90s with Plymouth Hoe’s sea as backdrop to a full festival light show.

Pete Tong said: “I’m looking forward to bringing the Ibiza Classics show to Plymouth with Jules Buckley and the Heritage Orchestra. It’s our only South West tour date and we’re going to make it a night to remember.”

The show will also feature guest vocalists, TBA. MTV Presents continues brand’s tradition of partnering with tourism and councils to promote host cities to music fans.

Amanda Lee, marketing manager at Plymouth City Council, said: “This show is going to be truly spectacular and we’re thrilled to be able to give music fans in the South West the opportunity to see such a unique, world-class act. There’s nowhere else in the world quite like Plymouth Hoe, so the views combined with the music mean this is going to be an unmissable event!”

Day One of Ocean City Sounds on Thursday 26 July will see indie titans Bastille perform a full 90-minute set, supported by Ella Eyre, Professor Green and R3WIRE & VARSKI. Day One will be part of the ‘MTV Presents’ series – which will also include Gibraltar Calling and Varna Beach in Bulgaria. UAE Claims ‘Largest Aerial Firework Shell’

UAE: New Year went off with a bang and firework display record on Ras Al Khaimah and Al Marjan Island in the UAE.

The celebrations took the Guinness World Records title for the ‘Largest aerial firework shell.’ Hundreds of thousands of visitors attended the New Year’s Eve event which was designed by Phil Grucci, CEO and creative director of Fireworks by Grucci for Al Marjan Island.

The event was verified by an adjudicator from Guinness World Records and the bid for the ‘Largest aerial firework shell’ was officially recognised. The award was presented to Eng. Abdullah Al Abdooli, MD of Al Marjan Island and Phil Grucci.

Eng. Abdullah Al Abdooli, MD of Al Marjan Island, said: “The 2018 Ras Al Khaimah New Year’s Eve Fireworks by Al Marjan Island was a spectacular success that welcomed visitors from around the world and cemented the reputation of the emirate as a must-visit destination for New Year’s Eve galas. Adding to the pride of Ras Al Khaimah and our nation, the event is a true testament to the joint efforts of various governmental entities, which ensured a safe and seamless celebration.”

This previous title set by the Kounosu fireworks festival in Sitama, Japan in 2014 was comfortably beaten with Ras Al Khaimah reportedly deploying over twice the firepower. Its largest aerial firework shell propelled some 1,100 metres into its orbit.

The dazzling display lasted 10 minutes and was set to action from 120 sites. Highlights included the shell packed 390 comet stars of size 100 mm each flowering into white, red and green, to recreate the colours of the National Flag.

Starting with a 10-second pyrotechnical countdown to welcome the New Year, the audience was first greeted with a canopy of glittering chrysanthemums followed by the four islands of the Al Marjan Islands lit in a monochrome.

The prelude to the Guinness World Record bid featured an array of silver and gold with the dramatic fireworks powered by the exclusive SkyEtching technology of Fireworks by Grucci.

Preparations for the celebration started in early 2017 with the expansive area of Al Marjan Islands serving as a perfect template for a spectacular show. While it took over 600 hours to design the show by Phil Grucci, another 70,000 man-hours went into transitioning the design with a team of 40 experts including programmers, producers, pyrotechnicians and documentarians working on the project. The firework components for the aerial shell were hand-crafted exclusively by Grucci in their factories in New York and Virginia over a two-month period.

Phil Grucci said: “Our brief was to deliver a 'Beyond a Journey' design and to fabricate and display this amazing marvel in fireworks. The inspiration of the design was the unique natural resources of Ras Al Khaimah and the natural beauty and expansive space of the Al Marjan Island with a sense of celebration to welcome in the new year 2018. With the event, a performance art, we wanted to highlight the feeling of harmony and peace and the excitement and celebration of what Al Marjan Island is and is set to become. We are delighted to secure this honour for Ras Al Khaimah, which takes its New Year's Eve celebration to the next level.”

Musical co-ordination came from by Dan Mullins of Fireworks by Grucci and ranged from Race to Dakar (performed by Marvine Bounds Gordy-Benoit Pierre Grey) and Caped Crusader (James Price).

Design Awards Nominees

The Design Museum in London has announced its world awards shortlist of outstanding design. Lucy Kale looks at the nominees.

The 10th anniversary of the awards sees a fluid and provocative mix of design that spans the worlds of political unrest and fashion brands alike. Opening 18 October, this year’s nominees include a hijab designed by Nike and a clothing line by Kanye West for his Life of Pablo tour, both included in the Fashion category.

Supported by specialist insurer Beazley, the exhibition and awards event comprises 62 nominations across six categories: Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Graphics, Product and Transport. Selected by a panel of distinguished international designers, curators and creatives, the awards showcase the most original and exciting products, concepts and designers in the world today. Previous winners have included the 2012 Olympic Torch, the Heydar Aliyev Centre by Zaha Hadid and Human Organs-on-Chips, a micro-device lined with living human cells to mimic the complex tissue structures of the human body.

Zaha Hadid Architects nominated for Antwerp Port House

This time, the Digital category features Pokémon Go, the augmented reality mobile game, which was a global sensation in July 2016. The recently knighted Sir David Adjaye has been nominated in the Architecture category for his National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. DixonBaxi’s TV graphics design for the English Premier League, with an estimated viewer reach of 4.7 billion people worldwide, has also claimed a Digital nomination.

Strong trends for activism and protest see a nomination for Pussyhat, made and worn in protest of President Donald Trump’s sexist remarks. Wolfgang Tillmans’ Remain Campaign for the Brexit referendum also features as does  IC4Design’s Finding Her ad which highlights low levels of gender equality in Egyptian professions.

Elsewhere, nominations include the world’s first 3D printed self-driving bus, the Olympic refugee flag and Me & EU by Nathan and Sam Smith, a collection of postcards written and designed by UK-based creatives to be sent across to, and stay connected with, Europe. Better Shelter, a flat-packed refugee shelter created with IKEA, was named the Beazley Design of the Year in 2016 and this year has seen further designs that attempt to raise awareness and improve the lives of those impacted by global displacement. The Refugee Nation Flag for the Olympics designed for the first ever Olympic refugee team follows the theme.

The Architecture category features some of the most established practices in the world today including Zaha Hadid Architects for their Antwerp Port House, Serpentine Pavilion designer Francis Kéré for his Lycée Schorge Secondary School and OMA’s Il Fondaco Tedeschi development in Venice, Italy.

Festival Drugs Amnesty

Safety rather than legal condemnation is the focus of a scheme which allows festival revellers to have their drugs tested to ensure that they don’t contain dangerous additives. Lucy Reid

The call to increase such testing comes from the unlikely quarter of the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) which says that the service “will help minimise the risk of serious health harm as a result of recreational drug use.”

The move follows fatalities at several UK festivals with RSPH reporting that ecstasy deaths in England and Wales are up almost six-fold from 10 in 2010 to 57 in 2015. The drug safety testing was piloted in the UK at the Secret Garden Party and Kendal Calling festivals last summer, with the support of event organisers, local police and public health authorities. RSPH said that around one in five users decided to ditch their drugs when the true constituents were revealed by on-site testing. Event organisers have also backed reports of drugs being laced with insecticides and other foreign bodies.

The result is that drug users have been offered an amnesty from legal retribution if they present their drugs to The Loop, the on-site service provider that administers lab testing of drugs under the banner, MAST: Multi Agency Safety Testing. Headed by ‘drug scientist’ Professor Fiona Measham MAST claims the full support of the police.

She said:“The Loop has been conducting forensic testing at events for a number of years, but before now, we’ve only tested drugs seized by police, dropped in amnesty bins or provided by paramedics as a result of a medical incident. In the past we have been able to use that testing information to inform on site services and for generalised safety alerts. Here at the Secret Garden Party we took a big step forward because for the first time we’ve been able to offer the testing service to individual users as part of a tailored advice and information package provided by a team of experienced drugs workers.”

The eminent sense of the initiative was applauded by Secret Garden Party’s ‘Head Gardener’ Freddie Fellowes who added: "I am thrilled that we are able to pioneer this service; harm reduction and welfare is a vital part of hosting any event and it's an area that for too long has seen little development or advancement."
