ISLE OF MTV – MALTA

Red Carpet is back from Malta where Rita Ora, Jessie J, Rudimental and DJ Afrojack performed at the packed Isle of MTV event. Sat Bal  (29 Jun’13)

Some 50,000 music fans streamed into Floriana’s Il-Fosos Square to enjoy the show - a seven-year collaboration between MTV and MTA (Malta Tourism Authority).

The Maltese summer breeze flowed along with the hospitality on the VIP platform which gave us a sweeping view over the packed Il-Fosos Square. On stage Rudimental kicked off the show with the breakthrough UK number one single Feel the Love and got the crowd going with their dance hits Not Giving In and Waiting All Night.

Rudimental, Not Giving In

The event production was enhanced this year with a stage that represented a ‘digital stargate’ tunnel of lighting and the central LED screen creating an effective 3D effect.

Rita Ora followed Rudimental on stage. In an all-white ensemble she roused the crowd with Hot Right Now, RIP and How We Do (Party. Backing dancers comprised storm-troopers while the singer conveyed her appreciation to the Maltese crowd several times.

Twilight signified the arrival of Jessie J who bounded on stage in black hot pants. An odd choice given her earlier claim that ‘I don’t want my knickers to show’ in a thigh-split dress at a press call that breezy morning. But that’s showbiz and the Do It Like A Dude star delivered Price Tag, Who's Laughing Now and Domino to the dancing crowd.

Jessie J – she came in peace

Jessie J’s command of the audience also took an unexpected turn when a fight broke out in front of her. She promptly stopped the show and urged the aggressor to “kiss and make up” before decrying the state of “angry men”.

Her final call was positive; “enjoy life and live for the moment”. She then went on to thank the European fans for “one amazing party” and closed with a lively performance of new single WILD.

It then fell to multi-award winning, platinum selling producer and electro-dance DJ Afrojack to take the Isel of MTV to a close. The two-time Grammy award-winning producer and DJ had the crowd dancing to underground hits including platinum-selling dance anthem Take Over Control, Titanium and As Your Friend, the global star’s latest collaboration with US singer/songwriter Chris Brown.

The Isle of MTV will air across all MTV channels globally in a 60-minute Isle of MTV Malta programme from 03 August and it will also air as part of the World Stage franchise. Previous Isle of MTV main event locations have included Torre de Belém, Lisbon, Portugal (2002), Ile du Gaou, Six-Fours Les Plages, France (2003), Tossa De Mar, Costa Brava, Spain (2004), Piazza dell Unita’ d’Italia, Trieste, Italy (2005) and seen performances from the likes of Gorillaz, Outkast, The Black Eyed Peas, Garbage, The Chemical Brothers, Shaggy and Morcheeba
