Somerset House cooks up Tom's Kitchen

Michelin-starred chef Tom Aikens stars in his own right at Somerset House’s River Terrace Café which has now been transformed into Tom’s Terrace following Aikens’ partnership deal with contractor Compass Group. There’s also change at the existing Admiralty Restaurant now known as “Tom’s Kitchen at Somerset House”. Abigail Parkin (14 May ’10)

The Terrace Café, recently honoured as “Best place to eat al fresco in Britain” by The Times, now lies under a futuristic canopy which shades diners from the sun as they taken in views of the river Thames. Here (subject to the weather) guests can sample Tom Aikens’ informal, al fresco-style menu which includes Tom’s Kitchen Tasting Board (incorporates Coronation Crab Salad, Mini Burgers and Tartine of Red Onion and Aubergine Compote), Grilled Paillard of Chicken Salad, Hot Smoked Loch Duart Salmon and an enticing array of desserts such as Eton Mess and Mango Rice Pudding.

Tom’s Kitchen at Somerset House follows the successful blueprint of Tom’s Kitchen restaurant in Chelsea.  The concept and menu have simply been conveyed to the larger, salubrious surroundings of Somerset House which offers favourites including Daylesford 7 hour Confit Lamb and Spicy Crème Brulee. The Deli stocks lighter fare including Lentil and Goat Cheese Tart and Endive and Walnut Salad.

“We’ve been looking to ‘re-fresh’ our restaurants at Somerset House for some time,” said general manager Jerome Ibanez General Manager “and with Tom we have found a partner who can deliver this re-fresh with style. Everyone who goes to Tom’s Kitchen in Chelsea raves about the food, the ambience and the service. We are going to take all that and add a dash of architectural splendour to the mix. Tom’s Kitchen at Somerset House is set to become a big player, setting the standard for the London restaurant scene.”
"Somerset House is one of the finest locations in London," added Sarah Miller, business director - Leisure, Compass Group UK & Ireland, owner of Somerset House, "but competition is fierce and we have to give our guests something fantastic if we want them to eat with us rather than at the dozens of other restaurants in the area. With Tom's Kitchen we have that added ingredient.”
