Sotheby's $26million Red Auction, New York

Thanksgiving in the US was preceded this week by a $26million influx raised by Red, the charity started by U2’s Bono and Bobby Shriver. Abigail Parkin (29 Nov’13)

 

Where & why?

 Sotheby's, New York hosted the Red auction which attracted a standing-room only crowd that raised millions for the Global Fund to fight against AIDS in Africa. The event celebrated design and innovation and was curated by leading designers Sir Jonathan Ive – Jony- (Apple’s design VP) and Marc Newson along with activist Bono (headline pic)

The sale proceeds rocketed to more than $13 million and was doubled by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Global and gilt-edged household names: Leonardo DiCaprio, Helena Christensen, Chelsea Clinton, Savannah Guthrie, John McEnroe, Meg Ryan, Anne V, Hayden Panettiere, Courtney Love, John Popper, Barbara Bush, Jenna Bush Hager, Chelsea Clinton, Bobby Shriver, Gayle King, HRH Princess Eugenie of York, The Edge, Mario Batali and Chris Martin.

 

The Lots 

Three lots alone brought in more than $1.5 million, including the two items designed in their entirety by Jony and Marc - a unique Leica Digital Rangefinder Camera, which sold for $1.8 million and a unique aluminum desk produced by Neal Feay Studio, which brought $1.7 million.

 

Highlights

  Auctioneer Oliver Barker opened bidding on lot 12, the Steinway & Sons unique

“Red Pops for (RED)” Parlour Grand Piano. Coldplay’s Chris Martin took to the stage to sing ‘Perfect Day’ and ‘Beautiful Day’ with Bono. The performance inspired more than a dozen bidders to compete for the piano, which was finally won by philanthropist Stewart Rahr for $1.9 million.

 Later lot 23, the Azzedine Alaïa pink couture long ruffle dress, was worn by supermodel Christy Turlington before it sold to applause for $149,000. The final surprise of the evening came at the end of the auction when the Gretsch Electromatic "(RED) Zero Generation" Bono "Signature" Guitar was added to the auction and sold for $250,000.

After the final fall of the hammer, guests made their way to Sotheby’s spectacular 10th floor galleries to be entertained at the afterparty by Nile Rodgers and Chic, as well as Angelique Kidjo. 

 Here, Leonardo DiCaprio made a surprise visit in what’s becoming his familiar low profile  overcoat and cap get-up. He was joined by Victoria’s Secret model and girlfriend Toni Garrn. Elsewhere Courtney Love mingled in a skin-tight Herve Leger dress  in high spirits.
