At an MTV cocktail party on Saturday night Bob Bakish clarified what the 20th EMA is about. The CEO of Viacom told us to expect an event – not a music concert. That ‘event’ exploded into a high-production extravaganza at Glasgow’s new SSE Hydro arena on Sunday night. Sat Bal (11 Nov’14)

Bob Bakish’s sentiments were made manifest when Ariana Grande (pictured) sailed above our heads singing Break Free  in a futuristic transparent pod at the ‘time-travel’ themed event. The ‘Best Pop’ and ‘Best Female’ winner went on to specifically honoured MTV on a ‘seamless production’ during her award acceptance speech.

Nicki Minaj (below) practically took over the EMA, hosting, performing and going through a dozen or so wardrobe changes throughout the show.  If it was about celebrating the bod then Minaj had a lot to celebrate. She squeezed into, and splurged out of, various costumes, notably when she performed Anaconda and Super Bass in a sheer corset to the delight of the audience.

The hip hop star’s rendition of The Proclaimers’ Walk 500 Miles didn’t quite convince us that she’d been practising her Scottish accent. While she didn’t light up a joint on stage like (allegedly!) Miley Cyrus last year’s EMA host, Minaj did keep the show crackling with a string of F-words that (allegedly) rivalled her wardrobe choices, in number and obscenity!

Admittedly, the show had its share of no-shows – One Direction (three awards including Best Pop),  Katy Perry (Best Look, Best Video) and Beyoncé (Best Song with a message) – but there were plenty of stars to make the quota glitter. Here were some of them…

U2's Bono took things in a more soulful  direction singing new track 'Every Breaking Wave'

Slash and Biffy Clyro infused the rock side of the show

Sheeran hits the stage

While Kiesza makes a call

Ozzy Osbourne is presented with Global Icon award by Slash

But the surprise result was Chinese singer Bibi Zhou who beat 1D and 5SOS  to Worldwide Act – a sobering thought for those who decry EMA winners as predictable. Well done Bibi!

Then off we headed to the MTV afterparty at Glasgow's The Arches
