Secret Arts Foundation backs installation artists

Today sees the launch of the Secret Arts Foundation by Secret Productions Limited, the production company that’s brought vibrant festivals such as the Secret Garden Party, Glade, Wilderness and other events to the British event calendar.  Abigail Parkin (26 Apr 12)

The Secret Arts Foundation was set up to help fund and support creative installation artists, whose work is interactive, ex-gallery and accesses the wider community. Its focus is on Installation Art, a sector which doesn’t have the sole backing of any other UK funding body according to Secret Arts.

In filling this gap in the creative market Secret Arts is curing the chief mischief behind selling Installation Art, namely, that it’s difficult to bring to the art market and sell because of its site-specific nature.

Secret Arts’ patron status will involve long-term nurturing of installation artists and their work as well as create relationships with their communities. Its immersion in the festival arena has put Secret Arts in the vanguard of the installation, performance and participatory art field. The Foundation has already committed over £200,000 across its funding platform to a broad range of artists in the last three years.

The result has been the effective leap from concept to ownership for the art pieces that have toured. Some artists have even taken the leap to gaining public art commissions from institutions such as The Hayward Gallery on London’s South Bank.

Secret Arts’ initiative is welcome news at a time when the Arts Council England is earmarked to lose funding by by 29.6% over four years. All eyes are on philanthropic private sector sources and as Colin Tweedy, CEO, Arts Business says “At this time much more is being asked of the private sector and of volunteers to create a Big Arts Society. I predict that private sector arts funding will become larger than public sector funding within five years.”
