Virgin, Rudimental (& Us) Take off!

What happened when Virgin Atlantic wanted to celebrate its 30th birthday? Two bands and a one-off exclusive performance at 35,000 ft, of course! Sat Bal boards Virgin Atlantic's 787 for the gig of a lifetime.

Our publicity arm Red Carpet Media Networks united with our favourite airline-of-the moment and fave band, Rudimental, who we'd interviewed at a recent awards show. Add event organiser Macky Drese (MD of Harmonic Events to the mix and you have yourself a show in the nose of a Boeing 787!

The #FlightDecks event was live-streamed via the plane’s wifi to an audience of thousands online as the flight took an audience of competition winners fans and VIPs from London to Atlanta. The publicity objective was to platform its new 787 aircraft,  named ‘Birthday Girl’ as a celebration of the brand’s 30th birthday.

Rudimental performed their hits in a specially redesigned Upper Class bar, taking the show up and down the aisles of the 787. They then joined Gorgon City for a DJ collaboration as the plane flew across the Atlantic.

DJ Locksmith took to the on-board PA system to get passengers dancing and the s how finale saw both bands walk the length of the plane accompanied by trumpet players and live vocalists as guests sang along.

The event faced several challenges in being held in an aircraft. The wifi onboard was unique, using satellite rather than terrestrial link-ups. Also the live-streaming had to scheduled to avoid blackspots over the Atlantic to keep performance continuity.

"We also set up our own wireless network onboard to make sure the music speakers worked throughout the plane," said Macky Drese. "Plus all the tech we brought had to undergo rigorous testing to get security clearance too."

Meigan Terry, director of communcations at Virgin Atlantic, added: "We christened our new 787, Birthday Girl, in Virgin Atlantic style and were thrilled to have both Rudimental and Gorgon City onboard with us."

"Both Rudimental and Gorgon City gave once-in-a-lifetime performances at #FlightDecks and we’re delighted that we could make this happen and could share it with music fans all over the world thanks to the innovative technology of the 787."
